Notes:

  • This is one of only three known shows recorded from the Fly By Night tour, also being the only known audience recording from the tour.
  • This audience master tape is amazing quality, easily rivaling the FBN tour soundboards, and showcases the best performance and setlist representation of the tour.
  • This is Rush's first full headline show at Massey Hall, and their second overall show at Massey Hall after having opened here for Nazareth in 1974. Rush would then later headline Massey Hall again in January 1976 during the Caress Of Steel tour, then three nights in June 1976 during the 2112 tour. For the many tours that would follow, Rush upgraded and would play all their homecoming Toronto shows at Maple Leaf Gardens instead, though all these Massey Hall shows are considered very big steps in Rush's career. The significance of this particular show to the band is definitely reflected in the power and energy of their performance here, further making it one of the definitive pre-2112 live recordings of Rush.
  • This show was recorded by the same group of friends who recorded Rush in 1974 on October 24 at Massey Hall, and again that year on December 12 at the University of Toronto. Just like those two shows, this show was also recorded by two different tapers among the friend group in attendance. Source 1 is the version that has circulated for decades, however as of May 2025 we now have a major notable upgrade direct from the master tape. Source 2 is completely uncirculated and is also transferred from the master tape. Both taper sources capture the complete setlist, though both have different cuts during Working Man due to the tape being flipped. Both sources also have short differences in cuts during the breaks between encores, while Source 2 also has a slightly longer capture of the band's intro tape. While both sources are great recordings, Source 1 has the edge in quality. A source merge version was created using all of the Taper 1 source, while using the Taper 2 source to fill in three minor segments of audio that were missing: approx 48 seconds of the band's intro tape, approx 16 seconds during the jam section of Working Man (due to tape flip), and approx 5 seconds extra during the encore break prior to In The Mood.

I'm extremely happy to share this huge upgrade today, direct from the master tape, this easily being the one I've been most excited for!
It took several weeks longer than I had hoped to get it available, but here it is!

We now have two unique taper sources of this concert, both recorded by the same friend group who recorded the multiple sources for October 24th and December 12th 1974.
Taper 1 master is the source that has circulated for decades on higher gen copies, which as of now we have this huge upgrade for, transferred direct from the master tape.
Taper 2 master is an uncirculated source, and while it also sounds great, it is a bit more distant, so the "winner" is still the Taper 1 source.

As also explained in my revised notes above, while both tapers capture the full setlist, they feature a few different cuts during tape flips and encore breaks, as well as when the tape starts.
The source merge version recommended above makes full use of Taper 1, while filling in three small gaps that were exclusive to Taper 2.
Later during the week, I plan to have both individual master tape sources uploaded as well.

So very excited to sit down and give this a proper full listen. One of my favorite recorded shows for the setlist and performance, and now in greatly improved quality! Six of the eight FBN songs performed in a row and in complete full versions!

Thank you, and yes, this is a time to be stoked about Rush recordings. Unreal. Thank you.
