Notes:

  • This footage was shot by Mike Coughlin. Exact date from the four-night residency is unknown, though minor differences indicate that this is not the same night as the April 4 audio tape.
  • This is currently the only known audience footage of the Permanent Waves tour, with the only other known footage being short news clips of the show in Buffalo, New York.
  • In its totality, this would be the longest Rush 8mm film known to exist, however we only have a small portion of the total amount filmed. Claimed to be 25 minutes in length, the short sample Mike provided was slightly under 3 minutes and running extremely fast. With speed adjusted, the length increased to a bit over 5 and a half minutes. This would suggest a total runtime somewhere between 30-45 minutes. Unfortunately, after optimistic interactions with Mike in 2024, our channels of communication disappeared and have been unable to reestablish contact since early 2025. To make matters worse, the short sample we have is of very poor and compressed quality. Before loosing contact, we were hoping to do a professional 4K scan and audio sync of Mike's film in conjunction with Classic Rock Media Archive. However, at this point in time, it's very uncertain if we will ever see anything further come of this.
  • A rough sync of the film was attempted by Rush Archives users By-Tor X-1 and Cygnus X1. It's not perfect, as my skill to do silent syncs is not up to par. Due to the poor scan, choppy frame rate, and short clips, the first 42 seconds were left silent after proving very difficult. Special thanks to The Analog Kid who grabbed Mike's sample off of Facebook before his account was terminated.
  • Additionally, Mike provided frame stills from his film, some being from parts that aren't seen in the video sample, such as Alex's doubleneck during Xanadu. Mike is also said to have filmed Rush at the Aragon Ballroom in January 1978, though no sample is available. If you know Mike personally, please help us get back in touch.
  • As with any 8mm film, full songs and concerts were not able to be captured due to the short length of each film cartridge (~3.5 minutes). Also, as with most 8mm film from the era, the film stock and camera used could not concurrently record audio.
  • Since there is no known audience audio recording of this date, the audio tape from Chicago on April 4 was used to sync sound and enliven the precise moments captured on this film.
