Notes:

  • This is the very first concert of the Vapor Trails tour.
  • This was Rush's first live performance in five years since the unfortunate events of 1997.
  • This audio recording is from a completely different audience source than the camera footage.
  • While the audio recording is complete, the footage is incomplete, missing the beginning of the concert which featured Tom Sawyer, Distant Early Warning, New World Man, Roll The Bones, and Earthshine. (*)

I haven't had time to look into this much yet, but I'm understanding that this is uncirculated footage. I could've sworn there was another source of footage of this concert, but I guess I'm remembering wrong. It isn't on my priority list, but at a later point I'll see to get the full footage in one video on YouTube. An audio swap is a potential job if quality suffers compared to old audio tapes we have of this show, but I don't know, again I haven't really looked into it yet. There are potential things to work on if necessary, and I usually go through all that before posting something here, but since this is new (and a significant show) I think it should be up as-is so people can talk about it.

(@TheAnalogKid Sorry for the lengthy delay in approving the post for public view, I kept hoping to look into it more first, but I still just haven't gotten to it)

No worries. I am currently working with another YouTuber to restore and enhance the footage from its current state because of how historically significant this show was. I plan on posting restored versions of songs soon hopefully. I just wanted to share this because this bootleg has been private for the past 16 years, and nothing but one small clip have been public until I posted a full song. As for the other source of footage, this show was professionally recorded by the band but only about 10 minutes of footage is public.

Thanks for posting this, but how do we watch it? Are these files that need to be burned onto a DVD?

Looking forward to watching this. I was at this show - I had good seats too as I was right behind the mixing board. I know it's been said before, there was definitely great energy there that night - not sure if any audio or video recording really captured how loud the crowd was when they first went on stage and the first few notes of Tom Sawyer were played.

These are DAT files. They can be played with VLC Media Player which is free piece of software that plays pretty much any type of file. You can burn these to DVD if you prefer a physical format. VLC will convert the files to a playable format when you install it and click on them. The DAT files are in the MPEGAV folder.

Here's a link to VLC. It's not malware and it works great. https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

As for the video itself, the camera work is all over the place and is not great for some songs. Some songs have file corruption and have pixelation issues. Ceiling Unlimited is unplayable for about 30 seconds near the end of the song. In order to watch the full thing without crashing the software you'll need to skip forward when the song starts to get very pixelated.

Link on the full post no longer works due to me accidentally deleting the folder. Here's a new working link to the unrestored footage.
Thanks, I updated the link in the main post.
Also, I should have fixed it to where anyone can edit their own posts at any time in the future (disabling the 7 day window), so feel free to make future edits to it down the line.

If there is file corruption, could the original filmer retransfer the footage? I think you said you got it directly from the taper?

@CoS I can vouch for VLC, I've used it to run raw DVD files, or just to play DVDs on my computer.
Down the line though I'd like to see a more accessible version onto YouTube, probably after the "restoration/enhancement" process @TheAnalogKid mentioned.

Right now I'm trying to find the original taper. The video was sent to me by someone who's owned this boot privately for a long time. Unfortunately he could not remember who sent him the footage, all he was able to recall was that he's had it since the early 2000's. If its possible down the line I'd definitely like to get a new transfer done if we're able to locate the taper.

If that's the case, that it has been circulating in small/private trading circles for a long time, I'll ask someone who may have some knowledge about it.
Now it makes sense why it is formatted ready to be burned to a DVD, that's not something I expected from something that hasn't been in circulation.

I suspect that this boot circulated among a small group of people, and was held onto tightly until recently when I got my copy. Literally until I uploaded one full song a month ago, there was only one clip publicly available, and it was posted 16 years ago. And if you do find anyone who might know something, please let me know so I can credit the taper if possible.
